Year 3 have stepped back in time and experienced different elements of Stone-Age history. We have looked at the importance of fire and how this was made. We have made tools from wood and flint and have taken time to tell a tale through our own cave paintings and created reconstructions of a Neolithic settlement. We are excited to learn all about how Britain changed from the Stone-Age through to the Iron Age. We are all very much looking forward to our trip to Wandlebury.

Trip to Wandelbury 11.11.16
Squirrels class enjoyed a fantastic trip to Wandlebury Iron Age hill fort. We spent the morning exploring the site where the Iron Age fort would have stood.  . Afterwards, the children had the opportunity to make bread, grinding wheat on a quern, before cooking the flour mix on an open fire.   We finished the trip by weaving wattle panels  which would have been used to construct Iron Age houses. It was quite tricky to weave the sticks accurately but we all managed to construct a small panel to take home with us.
English - Poetry
This term our learning has been focused on poetry. We have enjoyed reading a wide range of poems.  We particularly like 'Walking with my iguana' by Brian Moses.  Our favourite poet at the moment is Michael Rosen. You can find some links to his performance poetry below:

The children have been striving hard to write descriptive sentences using adventurous adjectives, powerful verbs and adverbs. We will put all our learning to good use when we write our own dark and deep cave poetry. Keep a look out for some examples of our work to be posted soon!

Some examples of our cave models

In order to inspire our poetry writing, the children worked together to create a cave model from junk modelling. We focused on developing our team work and communication skills as well as our resourcefulness.

Maths - Fractions and Shape

In maths this term we have been investigating fractions and shape. First, we explored the relationship between fractions and division and practised finding fractions of amounts. We also explored fractions of shapes and put our creative hats on to create some interesting fraction designs.

Autumn 1 - 'Chocolate'

We have had a fantastic start to the year and the children have enjoyed getting stuck into our first topic - 'Chocolate'. We were lucky enough to be invited to try the new taster menu at ‘Cocoa Jeavons’ – an up and coming gourmet chocolatier. Everyone was on their best behaviour in the restaurant and they all enjoyed the fantastic service. We cleverly noticed the different flavours of all the foods offered and in particular the many different types of chocolate! Afterwards, the children were busy writing reviews of their experience.

Maths- Place Value
In maths, we have been learning about place value and partitioning, which was really useful when we moved on to mental addition, money and measures. We have been using our role play area- Willy Wonka’s factory - to share amounts and practice our knowledge of division and fractions. We also have practiced lots of different strategies for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing and the children are fast becoming experts in using number lines, partitioning and arrays to solve a variety of calculations.

English - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

We really enjoyed embracing the fantasy world of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, first story mapping, innovating and then writing our own stories with imaginary settings. We worked hard to provide lots of descriptive words to paint a picture in the reader’s mind.

Science-Solids, Liquids and Gases

In Science we have been learning about the different states of matter and their properties.  We took our learning outdoors to role lay what happens to particles when they are heated - turning from a solid, to a liquid and finally to a gas.

Picture 1 In a solid, the particles are close together
Picture 2 In a liquid, the particles are in a random pattern
Picture 3 In a gas, the particles are spread apart

 DT- Chocolate Bars

As part of our chocolate topic, the children designed and made their own chocolate bars. This culminated in  presenting our designs for Dragons Den.The Squirrels are fantastically intuitive at selling their product, using brilliant persuasive features.
